You Might Soon Be Able to Carry Your Drink Down Main Street

Ames is one ordinance away from joining a growing number of Iowa cities that allow people to carry alcoholic beverages on public streets during approved events.

Iowa's 2026 legislature passed a law allowing cities to create "Social Districts". Designated areas where people can walk around with drinks in specially marked cups during approved events. Ames Main Street proposed a district covering traditional downtown south of the railroad tracks, and the city council directed staff to draft an ordinance and run it through the Planning & Zoning process.

The proposed district would cover downtown Ames but not City Hall, the Library, or Campustown. City staff noted they'd have concerns applying it that far. Nothing is final yet, but the wheels are turning. (info)

Witches' Night Out Could Be The First Test of Ames' New Social District

If the Social District ordinance moves through Planning & Zoning in time, Witches' Night Out in downtown Ames could become the first event where you can legally stroll Main Street with a drink in hand. No date has been announced yet, but it's the first event Ames Main Street has flagged for the new program. (info)

Last Neighborhood Connections Stop

The city's summer road trip series wraps up with its final stop on Wednesday, September 23 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Roosevelt Park, 905 Ninth St.

The usual lineup is all there: city vehicles, equipment displays, elected officials, staff, snacks, and good neighbor energy. But this one has a bonus: Penny, the Ames Police Department's Crisis K-9, will be celebrating her first anniversary with the department and will be on hand with her handler, Sgt. Amber Christian. North Ames Is About to Get a Lot Bigger

We briefly mentioned Hayden's Preserve earlier this year when it first started moving through the approval process.. but it's back, and things are getting more serious. Two major housing developments are working their way through the rezoning process in north Ames and together they represent the biggest residential growth story the city has right now.

Hayden's Preserve at 5571 Hyde Ave is a 170-acre development near Hyde and 190th Street. The updated master plan bumps the maximum unit count from 620 to 675 homes, shifting the mix toward single-family detached homes, attached housing, and townhomes. The city is offering significant incentives to make it happen, including waived traffic signal, water, and sewer connection fees for the first roughly 215 dwellings, a new shared-use path along Hyde Avenue, and funding for a trunk sewer.
