Good morning Ames! Think you love your work? Fred Baur, creator of the iconic Pringles can, was so proud of his design that he had his kids bury him in it. Not many people know he also designed the chips themselves. Although another scientist, Alexander Liepa, was brought in after Fred couldn't make them tasty enough.

Your K-Cup Has Been Sitting in a Warehouse for Months

That grocery store pod? It was roasted long before it hit the shelf. Coffee starts losing flavor within weeks of roasting — which is why your morning cup tastes flat, no matter how nice your machine is.

Angelino's does it differently. A third-generation roaster in Los Angeles, they roast, grind, and seal every pod in-house for peak freshness, then ship it to your door within days of roasting. The difference is the first thing you'll notice: real aroma, real flavor, no bitterness.

Mix and match from 50+ specialty coffees, teas, and flavored blends — all Keurig®-compatible — and save more with every box you add, up to 34% off at 12+. Order once whenever you're running low, or subscribe for an extra 5% if that's easier. Entirely up to you.

New customers get 15% off their first order — applied automatically, no code needed.

📢THE DIGEST

The Emma McCarthy Lee Trail Is Closed

The flooding from July 1-3 left more than wet basements and flooded roads behind. Clear Creek overflowed its banks during the heavy rainfall and eroded portions of the Emma McCarthy Lee Trail connecting the park to Oakland Street, washing away sections entirely.

The trail is now closed indefinitely. No reopening timeline has been set, and it hasn't been determined yet whether the damaged sections can even be restored. City staff are evaluating the damage before any decisions get made. Closure signs and fencing are in place, and the city is asking everyone to respect them for safety reasons. (more)

400 Rubber Ducks. One Lazy River. A Kayak on the Line.

Mark August 12th on your calendar — the Fourth Annual Scholarship Duck Derby is back at Furman Aquatic Center and it's exactly as fun as it sounds.

Starting at 6:45 p.m., rubber ducks get released into the lazy river and race to the finish line. The fastest ducks win prizes donated by local businesses — including a nine-foot kayak from CrawDaddy Outdoors, a kids' mountain bike from Bike World, and gift cards from Hickory Park, The Mucky Duck, Chocolaterie Stam, North Grand Cinema, and a bunch more Ames favorites.

Ducks start at $5 each, with bulk options up to 50 ducks for the truly competitive. Purchase online at cityofames.org/DuckDerby or in person at the Community Center or Furman. Spectators get in free.

All proceeds benefit the Parks and Recreation Scholarship Fund, helping youth and families afford programs and activities throughout the year. (more)

A Gentler Goodbye for Ames Pets

CodaPet, a mobile veterinary euthanasia network now operating in over 250 cities across the country, has expanded to Ames this summer. Dr. Amy Monroe (an ISU grad who joined CodaPet in May) is leading the central Iowa practice.

The idea is simple but meaningful. Pets don't understand what's happening, but they understand where they are and who they're with. Being at home means no clinic anxiety, no strangers nearby, just a pet in their own space with the people who love them most.

The process is flexible and family-centered. A vet connects with the family beforehand to walk through everything and answer questions. CodaPet also offers quality-of-life assessments for families unsure if the time has come. On the day of the appointment, families can take as much time as they need before and after. Cremation and pet ink prints are available depending on the family's wishes. (more)
